Under the surface

What's under the work decides how long it lasts.

A cheap patio and a good one look the same the day they're finished. The difference shows up a few winters later: pavers sinking, a wall leaning out. That's all decided underneath.

    Finished surface

    Pavers, block or stone, set on a screeded bedding layer, checked for level, and the joints filled and compacted.

    Backfilled edges

    Dirt backfilled and packed tight against the outside edges. That's what holds the pavers together and keeps them from spreading. Then we seed and straw it, so it grows back in as lawn instead of staying bare dirt.

    Crushed stone put down in layers, each one compacted before the next. This is the part the low bid thins out.

    Firm subgrade

    Dug down to firm ground and compacted, and kept separate from the stone so the clay doesn't work up into it.

    Grade and drainage

    Everything pitched so water leaves, with rock channels where it needs a path. Water sitting under a patio is what moves it.
